Did You Know the Importance of Colours for Your Babies?

Did you know that not exposing your children to enough colours can harm their development? Majority of parents today do not know the importance of colours for babies. Babies are facing Delayed Visual Development, Limited Cognitive Stimulation, Reduced Emotional Development and Slower Recognition and Differentiation skills. Why? Just because parents are moving towards a more basic and minimalistic house model with almost monotonous colour schemes.

This is why BabyKavach wants to write a petition to make colourful playrooms a part of every parent’s process of baby-proofing! Colours are an intrinsic part of the child’s development. As more and more parents shift towards a minimalistic approach when choosing an aesthetic for their homes, it becomes essential to make spaces, especially for their little ones where they get adequate exposure to a variety of colours. Making a room dedicated simply to the baby and used by only them and their little friends is harmless to the interiors and a necessity for all babies.

Exposure to colours helps in the all-round development of the child as -

  1. Colours act as a stimulus for their brains. This aids cognitive development as well as influences emotions and creativity. Babies are more attracted to bold, contrasting colours like red, black, and white. These help stimulate their developing vision and cognitive function. By the age of 3-4 months, babies can distinguish between colours. This is why exposure to different hues helps in enhancing their visual cortex development.
  1. Each colour has a unique psychological impact on a child, which the child associates with different emotions. Research from the Journal of Pediatric Psychology (2019) indicates that specific colours can influence a baby's mood and behaviour.
  1. Colours help improve memory and retention of information. Babies exposed to a variety of colours showed 20-25% improvement in cognitive skills. These include increased memory and attention span compared to those exposed only to monochrome or neutral shades.
  1. They help in sensory, linguistic and cognitive development. Kids associate colours and names as their first connection between visual and linguistic elements.

Therefore, not only is there a need for colours in your house but also for colours that suit your child and his/her needs the best. Every child is special and unique, with their own specific needs for colour and emotions. These can be studied and implemented by parents and educators to ensure a better learning environment.
